Exercise 4.5 Model Answer |
Task |
Exercise 4.5 is much more involved than previous exercises. This time we are going to take a longer passage containing complex reasoning, and map the whole chain (or web) of argument.
The passage is the second column of page 6 of Apollo Moon Landings. We have already analysed various parts of this reasoning in earlier tutorials. The challenge this time is to put it all together.
Note that the text is not reproduced here; you should read it in the original document.
As with other exercises in Tutorial 4, there is no need to diagram hidden premises. However you may need to diagram some claims as co-premises.
Model Answer |
This diagram maps all the claims the author actually made as part of laying out the reasoning. It does not map hidden premises. Thus, to complete the map, we would have to unpack each of the reasons and objections and add all appropriate co-premises.
